Mountain View, United States – A major collaboration is underway to advance spatial computing. XREAL, a leader in augmented reality hardware, has announced a strategic partnership with Google and Qualcomm Technologies to expand the ecosystem of devices built on the Android XR platform.
As part of this effort, XREAL unveiled a new extended reality (XR) device, known as Project Aura, specifically designed for Android XR, at the Google I/O developer conference.
Project Aura is notable as the second official device announced for Android XR and marks the introduction of an optical see-through (OST) XR device to the platform. According to the announcement, it’s designed to be lightweight and tethered, offering a cinematic, large field-of-view experience powered by Gemini AI, aiming to set a new standard for immersive, wearable computing.
The partnership brings together key players in the technology space: XREAL contributes its experience in creating lightweight XR hardware, Google provides the Android XR software stack, and Qualcomm Technologies supplies its Snapdragon® XR chipsets, optimized for spatial computing.

Chi Xu, Co-founder and CEO of XREAL, described the moment as a “breakthrough moment for real-world XR.” He emphasized that partnering with Google on Android XR elevates XREAL’s vision of combining performance, comfort, and design into everyday wearable XR.
Shahram Izadi, General Manager and Vice President of XR at Google, expressed enthusiasm, stating Google is “thrilled to welcome XREAL to the Android XR family.” He highlighted that Android XR is the first Android platform built in the Gemini era and will support both Virtual see-through (VST) and Optical see-through (OST) devices. He sees the combination of Google’s platform with XREAL’s hardware leadership as a “pivotal moment.”
Ziad Asghar, Senior Vice President and General Manager of XR at Qualcomm Technologies, noted Snapdragon’s crucial role in XREAL’s new Android XR solution. He believes the collaboration is a significant step for the Android XR ecosystem, enabling immersive experiences in a unique OST product form factor and opening new possibilities for consumers and developers alike.
XREAL is a global leader in augmented reality, known for creating lightweight AR glasses and platforms that merge the digital and physical worlds. The company, recognized for its XREAL Air series and Nebula interface, is expanding into enterprise and AI-powered experiences and collaborates with major tech companies and a developer ecosystem.
The unveiling of Project Aura serves as an invitation for developers to begin envisioning new applications and use cases for this next generation of XR devices.
Developers already building for headsets on the platform will reportedly find it easy to bring their applications to Project Aura.
While Project Aura made its public debut at Google I/O, more detailed information is expected to be announced at Augmented World Expo (AWE) in June 2025, and further details will be shared later in the year.
