Santa Monica, United States – Get ready to learn the history of the beloved world of Sky. thatgamecompany, the studio behind the popular game Sky: Children of the Light, is presenting a limited in-game screening of The Two Embers: Part One, the first part of a new animated feature film.
This wordless animation will explore the long-awaited origin story of Sky, a kingdom previously described as a thriving realm of stars nestled in the clouds.
The Two Embers will tell a two-part story following the parallel journeys of two children whose intertwined fates will shape the destiny of a kingdom in decline. Part One specifically follows an orphaned child and a wounded manatee as they navigate a world threatened by darkness. The creators emphasize that the story, told without dialogue, aims to transcend language and cultural barriers, exploring universal themes like grief, anger, and kindness, resonating with audiences of all ages.
Jenova Chen, Executive Creative Director and CEO of thatgamecompany, commented on the film, calling it “the kind of story that stays with you—one that may leave you in tears, and grateful to hold your loved ones, and maybe even your pet, just a little closer.”
The preview screenings for The Two Embers: Part One will unfold across four weekly chapters, starting on July 21st. These screenings will take place inside the Sky: Children of the Light game.

This project marks a significant step for thatgamecompany, blending film and gameplay in an ambitious transmedia effort. According to the announcement, players will not just watch the origin story but will step into it, as each chapter will be accompanied by new in-game content designed to deepen the emotional and narrative connection through exploration and play. The film and the game are intended to exist simultaneously, enriching each other within a living, breathing world.
The in-game screening will utilize proprietary video streaming technology developed by thatgamecompany, allowing thousands of players to gather and watch together simultaneously in a shared virtual space within the new Sky Cinema theater in the game. This technology was previously showcased during the game’s AURORA concert event, which earned Sky: Children of the Light two Guinness World Records for connecting over 10,000 players on a single server.
The AURORA concert is set for a limited re-run in June, offering players another chance to experience the technology powering the in-game cinema.
