Pebble Returns: Two New Smartwatches Launch with PebbleOS

Pebble fans, rejoice! Two new smartwatches running the open-source PebbleOS are coming, bringing back the beloved features that made Pebble a hit.

The watches, Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2, are available for pre-order now.

Why bring back Pebble? “Pretty simple – because we want one!” says the announcement. The goal is to create a smartwatch that delivers on five key features: an always-on e-paper screen, long battery life, simple design, physical buttons, and hackability.

Core 2 Duo: A Familiar Favorite

The Core 2 Duo, priced at $149, is a modern take on the Pebble 2.

It features a 1.26-inch black and white e-paper display, a polycarbonate frame, and a 30-day battery life.

Upgrades include a Nordic nRF52840 BLE chip, a speaker, and improved sensors.

It’s compatible with thousands of existing Pebble apps and watch faces.

The Core 2 Duo is in advanced stages of production, with shipments beginning in July.

Core Time 2: The Dream Watch

For $225, the Core Time 2 offers a larger 1.5-inch 64-color e-paper display, a metal frame, and an estimated 30-day battery life.

It includes a touchscreen, a heart rate monitor, and a speaker.

This model is inspired by the unreleased Pebble Time 2, offering a premium experience.

The Core Time 2 is in the prototype phase, with shipments expected in December.

PebbleOS and Software

Both watches run PebbleOS, enabling features like notifications, timeline, watch faces, and fitness tracking.

The watches are compatible with thousands of Pebble apps, accessible at apps.rebble.io.

A companion mobile app for Android and iOS is in development.

These smartwatches are exclusively available through pre-order at store.rePebble.com. Due to limited supply, quantities are limited.

Why These Specs? The specifications are based on careful consideration of constraints, including display selection, Bluetooth chip, and battery life. The Core Time 2’s touchscreen aims to enhance user experience with “complications” on watch faces.

Who Should Get One? These watches are for Pebble enthusiasts who appreciate open-source, hackable devices. They are not intended for those seeking a perfect, polished smartwatch or a dedicated fitness tracker.
