LG Display Achieves Breakthrough: First to Verify Blue Phosphorescent OLED for Mass Production!

Seoul, South KoreaLG Display has announced a significant breakthrough in display technology, becoming the first company to successfully verify the commercialization-level performance of blue phosphorescent OLED panels on a mass production line.

According to the announcement, this achievement comes eight months after partnering with UDC to develop blue phosphorescence.

The display industry has long sought the “dream OLED” – an OLED panel that uses phosphorescence for all three primary colors: red, green, and blue. While red and green phosphorescence are already commercially available, achieving blue phosphorescence has been a major challenge due to blue’s short wavelength and high energy demands.

LG Display has overcome this hurdle by using a hybrid two-stack Tandem OLED structure, combining blue fluorescence in the lower stack with blue phosphorescence in the upper stack. The company states this hybrid approach consumes approximately 15% less power while maintaining similar stability to existing OLED panels.

Key to this breakthrough is LG Display’s success in reaching the commercialization stage, where performance evaluation, optical characteristics, and processability on actual mass production lines have been confirmed. LG Display has also completed commercialization verification with UDC.

The company has independently filed patents for its hybrid blue phosphorescent OLED technology in both South Korea and the United States.

LG Display will showcase a blue phosphorescent OLED panel featuring two-stack Tandem technology at SID Display Week 2025 in San Jose, California, starting May 11th. They will be unveiling a small and medium-sized panel applicable to IT devices like smartphones and tablets.

“The successful commercialization of blue phosphorescence technology, which has been called the final piece of the ‘dream OLED’ puzzle, will become an innovative milestone towards the next generation of OLED,” said Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display.

LG Display is a global innovator of display technologies, including thin-film transistor liquid crystal and OLED displays.
