Despite economic headwinds, innovation is holding steady. The European Patent Office (EPO) reports a near-record 199,264 patent applications filed in 2024, showcasing continued investment in research and development from across the globe.

“European companies and inventors filed more patents last year, underlining their technological prowess,” said EPO President António Campinos. He continues that these numbers act as a roadmap for industry, showing the continued investment in R&D.
Key highlights from the EPO Patent Index 2024
- Computer technology led the field for the first time, boosted by AI advancements.
- Electrical machinery, apparatus, energy saw the strongest growth (+8.9%), with battery innovation as a major driver (+24.0%).
- The United States remained the top country of origin, followed by Germany, Japan, China, and the Republic of Korea. Samsung regained the top applicant spot.
- Small companies account for 22% of patent applications, highlighting the strength of the industry.


The numbers show that the industry is as strong as ever, since this year’s data is pretty much on par with the previous year’s levels.
