Thomasville, United States – A significant step towards closing the digital divide has been completed in Thomas County, Georgia. Kinetic, a provider of fiber-optic internet, and Thomas County officials have announced the finalization of a nearly $13.3 million fiber expansion project.
The development brings enhanced internet access to thousands of residents and businesses across several communities, including Barwick, Boston, Coolidge, Meigs, Ochlocknee, Thomasville, and parts of Pavo. Leaders from Kinetic and Thomas County recently gathered to celebrate the activation of this new service.
“The need for high-speed internet in today’s fast-paced digital world continues to increase for our Georgia communities,” said Michael Foor, president of Kinetic’s Georgia’s Operations. “We’re proud to partner with the state of Georgia and Thomas County to bring more communities the internet essentials for residents and businesses in these areas.”
The project received substantial funding, including over $6.8 million from the State Fiscal Recovery Fund (SFRF) and a $1.3 million match from Thomas County. Kinetic invested an additional $5.1 million of its own funds to complete the infrastructure build. This project is part of a larger statewide effort involving Kinetic, the State of Georgia, and 25 counties, which has seen over $354 million invested in broadband infrastructure development since 2021, supported partly by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Mark NeSmith, chairman of the Thomas County Board of Commissioners, highlighted the local impact. “This initiative is a testament to our dedication to advancing Thomas County’s digital infrastructure,” he stated. “We are proud to partner with [Kinetic] and state officials to bring high-speed internet access to our community, paving the way for new opportunities in education, business and beyond.”
State legislators also commented on the project’s importance. State Sen. Sam Watson called it a “significant step forward” demonstrating collaboration between public and private sectors. State Rep. Darlene Taylor noted the project is “vital for the future growth and development” and essential for fostering innovation and economic development. State Rep. Chas Cannon added that the new network will have a “lasting impact” on rural southwest Georgia, enhancing connectivity.
The completion of this fiber network means residents in the newly covered areas can now access faster speeds, increased bandwidth, and more reliable connectivity, supporting everything from remote work and education to entertainment. Research cited in the release suggests that communities connected to fiber internet often see higher business growth, increased self-employment, and a boost in home values.
Over 5,000 locations in Thomas County are now eligible for improved fiber internet services as a result of this expansion.

Kinetic, a Windstream company, provides fiber-based broadband services in 18 states. The company focuses on expanding its network to deliver modern communications services, aiming to connect customers in underserved areas and bridge the digital divide.
