LONG ISLAND, NY – A New York family is taking Hilton Hotels to court, alleging a disturbing pattern of racial discrimination and harassment. The Pyatt family, Hilton Diamond members, filed a lawsuit in the US Eastern District Court of New York (case No. CV-25-1478), claiming they were targeted by staff at Homewood Suites in Plainview and Hampton Inn in Islandia.
The complaint details incidents spanning the COVID-19 pandemic until 2024. The family alleges a Homewood Suites assistant manager told them they “look like a black family from the hood who receives assistance through welfare” and were “not the right image” for the hotel. This manager allegedly tried to move them to a different, “low budget” Hilton location. The family also claims they were denied a refund.
At the Hampton Inn, the Pyatt family says they faced further discrimination, including being denied a handicap-accessible room and being called racial slurs. The situation escalated, with the complaint alleging physical assaults against family members, including elderly Wade Pyatt. The family states a Hampton Inn manager instructed staff to leave Wade Pyatt on the lobby floor after a head injury, rather than call for medical assistance. He was later transported to a hospital ICU.
According to the lawsuit, a Hilton manager was arrested for harassing the Pyatt family, and individuals hired by the Hilton management team were arrested three times. The Pyatt family is seeking $150,000 in refunds, citing Hilton’s zero-tolerance policy on discrimination. The Suffolk County Police Commissioner’s Office also investigates the family’s claims. Wade Pyatt continues to receive medical treatment for injuries sustained during these incidents.
