Facebook has acquired GIPHY, The most popular GIF search engine and hosting platform.
The deal is purportedly worth around $400 million according to a report by Axios.
The GIPHY team will be integrated into the Instagram Team according to a blog post from Facebook.
First launched back in 2013, GIPHY not only provides hosting for GIF images but also a search engine to a wide assortment of GIFs. The platforms API also makes these GIF available via its API which is used across a wide cross selection of platforms such as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Reddit, Whatsapp, Discord, Slack, Twitter and Instagram just to name a few then you have an interface.
What is next?
Instagram’s Vice president, Vishal Shah notes in a blog post that will continue to offer is Library, API and platform just as the norm:
GIPHY will continue to operate its library (including its global content collection), and we’re looking forward to investing further in its technology and relationships with content and API partners. People will still be able to upload GIFs; developers and API partners will continue to have the same access to GIPHY’s APIs; and GIPHY’s creative community will still be able to create great content.
GIPHY is already used among Facebooks’ Facebook app, Messenger and WhatsApp for along time hence this has been a perfectly executed acquisition.
It looks to be seen if platforms will make a shift to other GIF API’s of build there own in an effort to not become tapped in any possible privacy issues.
