Epic Games Store embraces blockchain and NFT games

Blockchain, NFT, and Crypto Game Developers breath a sigh of relief?

Epic Games has affirmed that it is open to selling video games that use Blockchain and NFTs within its Store, according to GamesIndustry.Biz.

Tim Sweeney, Epic Games CEO tweeted that his company would allow titles using blockchain and NFT technology “provided they follow the relevant laws, disclose their terms, and are age-rated by the appropriate group.”

The news comes on the heels of Valve’s recent Steam Store Ban on Blockchains-based and NFT inclusive games. These new guidelines from Valve completely ban game developers on steam from publishing “applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs,”.

Sweeney further clarified that Epic doesn’t currently use Blockchain Technology nor NFTs within its games but would welcome the innovation which would improve gaming technology and finance.

He also noted:  “As a technology, the blockchain is just a distributed transactional database with a decentralized business model that incentivizes investment in hardware to expand the database’s capacity. This has utility whether or not a particular use of it succeeds or fails.”

Great for Blockchain, NFT, and Crypto Games?

Not so fast, while Epic Games provided further details to the Verge which emphasize that there are some limitations.

They say those limitations will be clarified at a later date while they work with game developer on how they plan to include blockchain tech within their titles.

Epic will also use this discovery stage in order to decide how they will use blockchain technology within their name titles.

This news should come as a welcomed one from Game developers who were affected by Steams ban and we should look forward to how Epic will handle this technology.
