Dance Your Way to Free Data? Opera Mini Launches Challenge in South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa – Opera Mini is tackling the issue of high data costs in South Africa head-on with a new national campaign called Data Dance.

The initiative uses the country’s vibrant dance culture to engage youth on TikTok and offer a chance to win significant amounts of airtime.

The campaign invites South Africans to record and share their dance routines on TikTok using the hashtag #operaminidatadance and a custom amapiano track created for the event. The goal is to raise awareness about data affordability while providing a fun opportunity for users.

According to a recent report commissioned by Opera, internet costs are a major concern for young South Africans. The survey found that 62% of respondents aged 16 to 35 believe internet access is too expensive.

A large majority (86%) feel that affordable internet could dramatically improve their lives, particularly regarding education and job prospects. Data constraints are a frequent issue, with 63% running out of data at least every other month and 31% reporting it happens monthly. This leads to feelings of frustration, disconnection, and exclusion for many.

Opera Mini, a mobile browser known for its data-saving technology, is behind the campaign. The browser helps users consume less data through built-in compression and ad blocking features. Through the Data Dance challenge, Opera Mini is offering substantial long-term data support.

How to Participate?

To participate, dancers should:

  1. Use the “Opera Mini Data Dance” amapiano track found in TikTok’s sound library.
  2. Videos must be uploaded to TikTok with the #operaminidatadance hashtag.

The most creative submissions will be awarded airtime prizes, including a grand prize of up to five years’ worth of airtime, with other prizes offering three years and six months. The campaign started on May 22nd and will run for four weeks.

Opera Mini is designed to help users maximize their data packages. Its unique data compression technology can reduce webpage sizes and load times, allowing users to browse significantly longer on the same data plan. An Extreme Data Saving mode further conserves usage by blocking ads and limiting image quality. The company has provided millions of gigabytes of free airtime in South Africa through past campaigns and continues to invest in supporting users through technology and partnerships, including offering 3GB of free monthly data to MTN users who browse with Opera Mini.

This Data Dance campaign is the latest step in Opera Mini’s commitment to making mobile internet not just more affordable but also more inclusive, engaging, and relevant to the local culture.
