Louisville, Kentucky, USA – The conflict surrounding the KentuckyWired broadband project has escalated, with Accelecom, a key partner in the initiative, publicly refuting claims made by the Kentucky Communications Network Authority (KCNA).
Accelecom alleges that KCNA is mishandling the project and is attempting to shift blame for its own “gross incompetence.”
In a statement issued today, Accelecom denied being at fault for the project’s state, calling KCNA’s narrative “categorically false.” Accelecom maintains it has faithfully honored its Wholesaler Agreement with KCNA and has even gone “above and beyond,” including lending KCNA millions of dollars to replace infrastructure that Accelecom claims deteriorated due to KCNA’s poor maintenance.
Accelecom directly challenged KCNA’s public complaints about a lack of wholesale customers and dark fiber sales. The company stated it currently has 44 wholesale customers and that KCNA is allegedly denying dozens of potential dark fiber sales transactions, some of which have been pending KCNA review since 2023.
Furthermore, Accelecom claims KCNA has repeatedly breached their agreement. These alleged breaches include denying Accelecom access for connections and canceling the contract before ongoing disputes – which Accelecom says are being pursued in Kentucky courts and with the Finance Administration Cabinet – have been resolved.
Adding to the issues, Accelecom alleges that KCNA, having exhausted its construction budget due to cost overruns, gave away thousands of miles of dark fiber capacity to third parties in exchange for construction services.
Accelecom noted the amount of fiber given away is “many times” what it was expected to sell over the entire contract lifetime.
Despite what it describes as KCNA’s “deplorable conduct,” Accelecom stated it remains committed to the project and is working daily to keep the KentuckyWired system operational. The company asserted that the current “emergency” causing distress is entirely KCNA’s creation and that KCNA is disregarding its contractual duties and harming the public.
Accelecom affirmed it “stands ready, willing and able” to continue honoring its obligations to KCNA and its customers.
Accelecom urged concerned citizens and business owners to voice their concerns and hold KCNA leadership accountable, emphasizing that while the project can still be salvaged, time is running out.
Accelecom is a provider of fiber solutions across the Southeastern United States, offering high-speed network, internet, voice, and managed services to wholesale, public sector, and business customers.
